Desperation Road by Michael Farris Smith

I listened to Desperation Road on audiobook and the narration was a bit distracting for me. I would really suggest reading a print copy of this one. Besides that I really enjoyed this wonderful, perfectly paced, heartfelt story filled with some characters with quiet desperation and others with violent desperation.
We hear mostly from moody and loner Russell and gritty, beaten down, Maben who are struggling to leave the past behind them. However secrets, old mistakes and revenge can make for a desperate road. We follow along and learn their stories with their road taken until their lives intersect and we learn how their past connects them. We also hear Larry’s story as we understand his self hate, his rage and violent revenge.
The warmth to the story, the tender relationships and moments give hope for redemption and balances well with this story. I highly recommend.
