We are going to start something new here for us and see how it goes and hope a few of you will join in on the discussion with us. Norma always has these random questions she is curious about so she has asked our Traveling Sisters a weekly (sometimes more) book related question. We thought it would be fun and interesting to take some of those questions to our blog and see what you all think or do.

Norma’s random book question:

Can you skim read or do you read every word?

I am unable to skim and have to read every single word. I think I am missing out or cheating for some reason if I don’t read every word. Plus, if I don’t read every word I think I might miss something relevant to the story.

I do wish that I was able to skim though because I even have to read the “he said” or “she said” at the end of dialogue sentences. LOL

I don’t read every word and always skim a bit while reading.  I like to think it’s more speed reading than skimming.  lol  If the story is slow and I feel I don’t need to know something or it’s just not working for me I will skim to get through it faster.  Sometimes if I really want to know how the story ends I want to skim to find out and then I have to really slow myself down.

As far as skimming, I do tend to skim if I’m not really enjoying the book. If it’s just “ok” and doesn’t seem to be anything special, I’ll skim to try to finish faster so I can move on to the next book in line.

I cannot skim at all. I have to read every single last word like it’s my job. (And I wish it were! Lol) It’s actually quite frustrating sometimes, though.
But, I figure if I’m gonna commit to a book, I’m going to read all of it. If I’m really not enjoying a book at all, I won’t think twice to call it quits. I feel like I’ll waste my time skimming, since I’m not getting the full story.  It’s interesting to see how different readers handle slower/redundant parts of books, and reads that they’re not particularly enjoying.

  3. Such an interesting question to learn more about my sisters!!! I’m definitely a read-every-word like Norma. I tried to skim recently because I took on too many books and I had to catch up, and I kept missing things!

  5. I read every single word. I can not skim. Skimming makes me feel like I’m missing something and I’m the type of reader who wants to savor every bit of a book. I’ll even reread a sentence (particularly dialog) if I think I didn’t hear the right tone of voice in my head when I first read it. The only drawback is that it makes me a much slower reader than most avid readers. But I wouldn’t change it for anything even if I could (and I doubt I can) because this is how I thoroughly enjoy reading.

  10. It all depends on the book. If I am reading a romance, I skim the graphic sex scenes if there are any. I might skim if I am not enjoying the story to see if it gets better, otherwise, I read every word. What a great question.

  11. I have to read every single word. I have tried to skim, but like Norma, I feel like I am cheating. Plus I feel like I would get halfway into the book and be lost! I would be more productive if I would skim though! 🙂 Great question, I often wondered what people do.

    1. Thanks Kim! Very interesting – I can understand how it feels like cheating – I’m sure I miss out on things when I skim, but I just can’t help myself! If I start to lose interest, I start to focus on getting through the book quicker so I can move on to something more interesting. Thanks for taking the time to reply! We appreciate it! 🙂

      1. No problem! That was an excellent question! I normally don’t like skimming either, but I find some books are a hit slow and require a bit of a push 😉 otherwise, I totally read word for word, which is why I’m such a slow reader!!

I just had to go read a little bit of my book to check coz I wasn’t aware of what I do haha! 😂 Usually depends on how much I’m enjoying it, if it’s a four or five star read, I want to savour it and read every word, if less than that, I may skim over a few words but still manage to get the general gist of the paragraph if that makes any sense?

  15. Occasionally i notice that i skim… sometimes it’s because i’m tired / sleepy and that case i go back a bit and try to read it again.
    But sometimes it’s because i got to a point that is a bit boring, so i just skim till it’s get good again 😀

    1. Thanks so much Norrie for joining in on the discussion! I would say that I have done that before where I have quickly gone over some sentences while reading but then I will have to go back and read it again because I realized I didn’t grasp what I read at all. It sounds like a few like to skim over boring parts and the more I am hearing that it is done more often than not I just might give myself permission to do just that. We will see though. 😂
